Emma portrays her role in this opening scene really well. The very controversial scene has had half a million views highlighting and questioning what kind of support there is out there for our youth, it’s particularly worse in the UK. The YouTube comments are up in arms with this topic.
I understand why people criticize Debbie for what happened, and yes, her decision to get pregnant was definitely not the best. But honestly, I feel really bad for her. All her life, she was searching for someone who would depend on her, something she never had with her parents. From season 1, it’s clear she struggled with abandonment issues and the fear of being alone. Therapy could have helped her a lot, but unfortunately, that’s not part of the show’s storyline. Debbie had so much potential to grow into a better character, and given her background, her choices make sense, even if they weren’t the right ones.
