I was one of the few people who didn't mind Britain leaving the EU. Honestly, Britain was never really 100% with the EU to being with, not using the Euro and all. Frankly, I don't like the idea of globalism. How one country is doing financially should have no effect on the finances of any other country. Then again, I'm also all for Texas leaving America and being their own country, because I guess I just love watching countries falling apart.
I understand what you're saying Mike, but the thing, and this is a straight no BS assessment here, humanity (or most of it at least) NEEDS to unite and it needs unite fairly soon. I'm not just saying this as an advocate for peace on Earth I'm saying it because if we don't get our shit together then our race isn't going to survive through the next couple centuries. If that means we need a totalitarian regime to get keep our asses in gear than so be it.
Now bear in mind that I HATE saying that, I really do. But, I just don't trust people to put aside their differences and come together so we can ALL get through the long term with out some sort of short term incentive. Climate change for example. It IS the greatest threat to modern civilization, not radical fundamentalism (though that is certainly a close second at the moment). ALL the world's major coastlines are doomed at this point and as Kyle from Secular talk as pointed out, the Middle East is slowly started to get the point of being uninhabitable! Other desert regions will likely follow suit bringing a whole new level of refugee crisis and with the coastlines gone, there won't exactly be many places for them go. Not to mention the inevitable wars for things like water! And of course, half the people in the US, (the most powerful nation in the world at the moment with enough clout and resources to actually do something about all this) think it's all BS and even a lot of people who don't still don't treat it like the urgent No. 1 priority that it is.
If we keep on doing nothing then modern civilization WILL collapse, a LOT of people will die, and we'll have freaking warlords seize power and control most of what's left. So we can either take totalitarianism now or later. Again, I hate saying this and I hope I'm wrong but I gotta say I don't like the way we're going right now.
I'm also all for Texas leaving America and being their own country, because I guess I just love watching countries falling apart.
As long as they leave us with Austin... which shouldn't be a problem for most of its other backwards residents. :P
On a lighter note. The only thing is, the University of Texas is in Austin, I.E. the Longhorns. Texans love their Longhorns like they love their Cowboys. There'd have to be a compromise to keep the University as Texan soil. Now THAT would make for a good political drama!
