One for those of you who remember watching the Batman Animated Series.
In the series, Victor Fries is a man trying to save his terminally ill wife Nora by putting her in cryogenic suspension while he tries to find a cure. Due to the actions of his ruthless boss, however, Victor is involved in an accident that mutates his body - preventing him from living outside of a sub-zero environment and essentially making him immortal due to his body’s aging process slowing almost to a halt; triggering his tragic transformation into Mr Freeze.
Despite this, he still works on a way to save his wife - no matter the cost. His wife is eventually cured via an organ transplant, but Victor’s condition begins to deteriorate his body and eventually reduces him to just his head, while he is put through even more pain as Nora eventually gives up waiting for him to return, marries her doctor and moves away from Gotham. Crushed at losing Nora after going through so much to save her, Victor begins his plans to make everyone feel his pain, However, he is stopped by Batman, Robin and Batgirl, with his head eventually been salvaged and taken to Wayne Enterprises.
In the far future of 2039, Victor is still alive and hasn’t aged a single day - still been kept at Wayne Enterprises (now Wayne-Powers) but is offered a chance at living a ‘normal’ life. However, like a good Shakespearean tragedy, Victor’s story does not end well.
His ultimate fate is easily one of the saddest moments of the Batman Beyond TV series.
