Unfortunately, it's not a good movie. Which is a shame because it could have been as epic as Avengers with all the science fiction elements it had. Instead, it only proved that Zack Snyder is a horrible storyteller.
The worst thing is... all they had to do was add a few lesbian scenes and I could have forgiven nearly all its flaws. >:(
I don't think lesbian scenes would have been enough to save the movie. Now, I might be over thinking this, but here's what I think could have saved the movie. Spoilers ahead!
1. The whole "Inception" storytelling doesn't work. The third and fantasy based action scenes being the result of some kind of dance is just plain stupid. What would have made a bit more sense is that the girls are taught a self-hypnosis tactic that they can use to imagine the action fantasy world that we were being sold in the commercials and trailers.
2. Abby Cornish is the only good acting among the girls. That might be a more personal option of mine, but take it for what it's worth. She would have been a much better lead. Likewise, Jamie Chung needed more to do. For my money, Jamie is the sexiest of the girls, yet she never really got her time to shine in either of the fantasy worlds. Plus she and Vanessa are killed off with little fanfare. "The Man with Iron Fists" gave her much more sex appeal that she deserves.
3. Not enough bellybutton exposure. You had a scene with Vanessa Hudgens belly dancing and you left it on the cutting room floor?! Plus, Abby was only in a cropped top for one scenes, and a short on at that? Skin to win, people!
4. There's no true friendship between the five main girls, they just team up because ... why not? It would have made more sense if Baby Doll befriended them one by one in an attempt to escape together. But not such scene is established so they are just a team because ... reasons.
5. Emily Browning really doesn't do anything for me. She did this erotic drama a few years back and I felt dirty whenever she was naked because of how youthful she looks.
I'm sure I could come up with more reasons, but those are my Top 5.
