I imagine the pitch meeting went like this:

Studio Executive: Gee, the fans aren't getting excited for this new Jumanji movie, no matter who we cast for it. Any ideas on what to do?

Karen: Well, this is just something off the top of my head, but back when I did Guardians of the Galaxy, the original costume design called for me to bare bellied. Since so many fanboys think I'm dead sexy, why not use that to our advantage and have me running around in the jungle with a cropped top?

Studio Executive: Brilliant! Go with that!

After all the backlash her and Dwayne Johnson insist that there will be a payoff for why she's wearing that outfit. That leads me to suspect that's it's purely for humorous reasons and not an avocation for the attire itself.

First they get rid of Princess Leia and the golden bikini, then they get rid of bare belly Princess Jasmine, now people are losing it over Karen wearing a cropped top to the point they have to make a plot device out of it?! What is with all this anti-bare belly hate?! I bet if The Rock was running around shirtless, we wouldn't hear one peep out of it.

I hate how some people are referring to this as a 'reboot' when this was never any sort of movie franchise; it was just a one-off '90s kiddie movie. It's a reMAKE (or else it's a sequel/prequel, in which case it should be called something other than just "Jumanji"). ::)
